Codicote Archaeological Digs

In 2017 and 2018, a number of test pits were dug in Codicote to find out more about this village's past, from its Saxon (and pre-Saxon) times right up to the present day.

5 pits were dug in 2017 and revealed a range of prehistoric flints, Medieval, Georgian, Victorian and later finds.  Surprisingly there were no Roman finds, which suggests no Roman settlement in the centre of Codicote.  Fuller details of the project and its finds can be found here.

5 pits were also dug in 2018.  Pits 1 and 2 were around Abbotshay, Pits 3-5 off Bury Lane, Codicote.

More digs are planned for 2019 on the weekends of:

11-12 May (2 test pits at Pottersheath - outskirts of Codicote near Rabley Heath)
&
22-23 June 2019 (2 test pits in Codicote High Street)

If you would like to find out more, or take part in these upcoming digs, please contact Nicholas Maddex at nkmaddex@btinternet.com or on 01438-821849.

Help is always welcome, not just for digging, but also for sifting, sorting, cleaning and recording finds.  You never know what will turn up!
