Codicote Local History Society exists to further the study of local and family history in the Codicote area and to spread knowledge about this subject.  We are pleased to welcome everyone who is interested in these topics.

The Society was founded in 1980.  Here's what the world used to look like at that time. We now have about 30 full and 20 corresponding members.  We always welcome new members.  If you'd like more information on joining please contact:  Nicholas Maddex, Chairman, tel: 01438-821849, e: nkmaddex@btinternet.com

There is a programme of monthly talks and outings. Talks take place on 2nd Tuesday of the month from September to May in the Peace Memorial Hall, High Street, Codicote, at 7.30 for 8pm. Outings take place in evenings in June and July at about the same time of the month. A historical tour of a local site or settlement takes place one Sunday afternoon in September in lieu of an August meeting. Details for the next few months are given in Programme Highlights 2021-22.

Other events include a walk around the parish boundary in the Spring, normally the 1st Bank Holiday Monday in May, and exhibitions in the Peace Memorial Hall in early Spring and at the Village Day in mid-July. The Spring exhibition takes the form of a Local History Day, with exhibits, activities and photos about the Codicote area are on display.

There are several research groups / working parties, including ones on Family History, Transportees, Exhibitions, and Photographs. Other members are individually researching subjects such as Codicote in Wartime and Codicote Medieval Manorial Rolls with help from the society.

The society has a lending library, from which members can borrow books, and archives, composed of photocopies, microfilms, and microfiches of historic documents, which members can also use.

We have a growing number of Publications, and the society also produces two quarterly newsletters, “Codicote Families” and “The Codicote Historian”, which are available by postal subscription.

We are always keen to hear from anyone who has family connections from the Codicote area, or who is interested in its history.  If you can't attend monthly meetings, you can still keep in touch by becoming a Corresponding member and receiving copies of our quarterly newsletter.
